Re-Design Ireland

James from Redesign Ireland spend 4 days facilitating workshops for the Transition Year Students in early November. The objective of the workshops was to help students to become more environmentally conscious and aware of the impact of their consumer choices. The course is designed to aid students in applying their learning to real life situations and fostering problem solving skills for real world problems.

The first part of the day included an Introduction and Information session about the Earth as a living organism, about Humans - the dominant species on Earth and Our impact on our home.

The second part of the day included discussions, debates and creative solutions related to looking at the current climate crisis, mass species extinction and pollution pandemic, students debated and discussed current issues collectively, they conducted a carbon footprint calculator individually and discussed active solutions and look at a future of sustainability.

Part three of the day involved putting the theory into action. Students were broken into research groups and were presented with tasks pertaining to issues which currently face our society. Students were given different roles and objectives to generate solutions to these problems and work collectively to portray their tasks in a short video.

Feedback from our TY students:

"This was the best workshop I have ever done. It was so fun. James was fun to listen to and he was very, very interesting and engaging. We learned all about travelling and the environment and we got to make our own videos. I would totally recommend and would definitely do it again."

TY Student CCS

"I enjoyed it because James was really interesting. He involved us in lots of activities, quizzes and kahoots. Making the video at the end was really fund as we were left to do it ourselves."

TY Student CCS

"The filming of the video was definitely my favourite part of the course. I enjoyed learning about what my carbon footprint was as I had never really thought about it before and have never taken the test before."
