Earlier this year, Clifden Community School recognised the achievements of Meera O’Toole, Shóna O’Toole, Róisín O’Toole and Finnian Williams in the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) competition. Róisin, Meera and Shóna competed in Microsoft Excel 365 and Finnian competed in Microsoft PowerPoint.
To qualify for the Irish Finals, Róisín placed first in the initial round of the competition. At the Irish Finals, Shóna finished first, with Meera, Róisín and Finnian also performing strongly and earning their places among the top students in Ireland.
Shortly afterwards, Microsoft introduced a change to the competition format. Instead of progressing directly to the World Championship, the leading students from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales were required to compete again to determine who would represent the UK and Ireland in Los Angeles.
Meera, Shóna, Róisín and Finnian continued to prepare steadily for this additional stage. In the revised UK and Ireland final, Meera finished first, earning the opportunity to represent the UK and Ireland at the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship.
Part of the prize for reaching this level was a trip to Los Angeles, where Meera competed in the World Championship. Shóna and Róisín also travelled as part of the award, supporting her and taking part in the experience. The prize included entry to Disneyland the day after the competition, which gave them a chance to relax and enjoy time together.
While in Los Angeles, Microsoft acknowledged the unusual achievement of three students from the same school reaching such a high standard in the competition. Their accomplishments reflected consistent effort, skill and a positive attitude throughout each stage.
Their journey is a reminder that competitions can change unexpectedly, yet progress is still possible through perseverance and support for one another. Clifden Community School is proud of everything Meera, Shóna and Róisín have achieved. Their success reflects their hard work and the encouragement of their teachers, families and classmates, and they represented their school and community with great credit on the international stage.
