The Clifden Boys' School Cup Rugby Season is back and our seniors got their campaign underway this week. The game took place in Monastery Field, and it was hard fought 55-31 victory over opponents Athlone Community College.
Clifden CS started the game very strongly with a quick brace of tries in the opening minutes, the result of some quick passing out wide with Luke Duane and Millar Yule touching down. The Clifden backs continued to make ground and keep Athlone in their own half of the pitch with some clever tactical kicking from out-half and captain Dylan King, who had a very strong game throughout.
Athlone couldn't live with Nathan Molloy and Darragh Kennedy in the centres, both players making plenty of yards going forward resulting in more tries for Clifden but they were also rock solid in defence, not giving Athlone an inch. By halftime Clifden were well ahead and only needed to keep doing what they were doing to see the game off.
However, a couple of injuries and a yellow card later, Athlone enjoyed a brief period of form scoring a few tries in quick succession. Further tries from Éanna Walsh and Lorcan Gay, and huge defensive displays Tighearnán Matz and Diarmuid Roche, helped to see out the result for Clifden.
The boys extend a huge Thank You to the school, Connemara RFC, coaches and team manager for their continuing hard work and support.
The next Senior Cup game is on Thursday the 6th of February, which sees the boys travel to play Gallen to decide who tops the pool.
