Be Adaptable! Disability Awareness Workshop
This workshop, specifically designed for TY students, ran in our school on 26th and 27th of April. These ‘activity based’ workshops are centred around equality and inclusion.
The aim of the day was to educate the students about disability awareness in a fun and enjoyable way. The sessions provided interactive and engaging training, with practical activities that provide some understanding of what living with a disability might feel like. Katie and Yvonne’s active learning methodologies kept participants engaged throughout.
Each student had the opportunity to experience what it was like to use a wheelchair and learn the different skills necessary. Everybody was surprised at how difficult it actually was to manoeuvre the wheelchair… especially as Katie made it look so easy!
The workshop was a huge success and students agree that this was a very positive, practical experience and overwhelmingly voted that the workshop should be offered to TY students again next year.
What our students said:
"Katie and Yvonne were great fun and made the workshops so enjoyable."
"Seeing Katie in her wheelchair I thought “how hard can it be?”. I soon discovered that it’s very difficult to manoeuvre a wheelchair!"
"This workshop was one of the best this year. It was enjoyable, fun and I learned so much."
"It made me think about how much I take for granted."
"Although I enjoyed the activity I found sign language charades difficult."
"Invisible disabilities are so widespread… I never actually thought about it before!"
