All TY students went on their second Work Experience in February. Unfortunately the final week of W.E. in May was cancelled due to the Covid19 school closures.
Work Experience is a key element of TY. It is intended that the Transition Year should create opportunities to vary the learning environment and to dispel the notion that learning is something that happens only, or even most effectively, within the classroom. One of the ways of doing this, and of providing an orientation towards the world of work, is to include a component of actual work experience. The placement introduces the student to quality work experience within a supervised framework that provides learning objectives and assessment as well as realistic and positive feedback.
School/student objectives include: the development of a sense of responsibility in the student, an awareness of the value and the psychological demands of work, a broadening of personal experience, the encouragement of punctuality, teamwork, and workplace etiquette, an introduction to a range of careers, an introduction to concepts and an experience of work evaluation.
We are very lucky in the area to have the cooperation of the local community without which TY Work Experience could not function. We appreciate and acknowledge the support of our Work Experience providers and wish them well in the days, weeks and months ahead.
